Immunizations – Volunteers

Please refer to the Center of Disease Control (CDC) website for further information, giving yourself ample time to complete the appropriate immunization schedules. Generally, the CDC divides vaccines for travel into three categories: required, recommended and routine (see below).

This resource offers several common sense recommendations, and also supplies a list of travel medicine clinics by clicking on the appropriate link under “Site Topics” and selecting your state of residence.

By clicking on the link “List of Destinations” you can select the Gambia and obtain specific information for this particular region of West Africa. Again, much general but extremely useful information is given. The specific vaccinations needed are as follows:

Required
Yellow fever

Recommended
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis B
Typhoid
Meningococcal Meningitis
Polio
Rabies

Routine
MMR (if not up-to-date)
DTP (if not up-to-date)

Prophylaxis
Malaria (exposure: every location at all times of the year)
