Health Care – Volunteers

Becoming ill while overseas can become very costly, especially if a medical evacuation becomes necessary. As we do not have the resources to provide travel or health insurance for our volunteers, we advise you to consult your insurance company regarding coverage provided by your policy while abroad. However, we strongly recommend that all volunteers also obtain medical evacuation insurance.

The US Department of State, is an invaluable resource and offers an extensive list of companies, which provide short-term policies for health insurance abroad as well as others, which provide medical evacuation services. Again, we strongly recommend you review this resource and obtain the necessary coverage.

Another option you may want to explore is the International Association for Medical Assistance for Travellers, which maintains a network of English-speaking physicians around the world who will provide health care for their members while overseas.

Lastly, general health guidelines should be reviewed and considered before departure. The following are excellent resources:

The Travel Doctor Site, contains up-to-date information provided by a physician-pharmacist team in the United Kingdom.

The OSAP Dentistry’s Resource, provides a Traveler’s Guide to Safe Dental Care.
