Mandinari Village is located in the Western District of the Gambia, near the village of Lamin. In 1986, desperate for medical care, the villagers built a small health post which operates without electricity or running water. The nurses must carry all the water needed for patient care in buckets from a nearby compound – an effort almost unimaginable for us! Still, the health post has served men, women and children from nine separate communities as best as it could. Now, however, it is in urgent need of renovations and major construction, which is how it came to our attention.

The community is warm and welcoming. The people are filled with hope and appreciation and are eager to build a collaborative partnership with us, where everyone helps everyone else, resulting in significant improvements of health and well-being for the entire community.

We will assume the management of the Mandinari Health Post on January 1st, 2009, turning it into the Mandinari Health Center which will be managed with input from the villagers via their Community Board. However, we are active in Mandinari immediately, as we need to build a perimeter fence to protect the health center property from vandalism and theft. Thereafter, remodeling and painting work needs to be done, the pharmacy area must be secured, and construction will begin on a building meant for staff quarters which had to be abandoned years ago due to lack of funds.

Photos of Mandinari Health Center

As the pictures show, the Mandinari people have to make do with the most spartan and inadequate equipment. Therefore, the Mandinari Health Center is also in dire need of basic medical equipment such as examination tables, privacy screens, scales, blood pressure monitors, glucometers, a microscope, stethoscopes – basically everything a medical office needs, but none of which this community has. We also need secure filing cabinets for patient records as well as books and equipment to set up a medical library.

This seems like a tall order, but we are not daunted by this task! With your help, we know that we can give to this community what it needs and deserves. Please help us help them!

In addition to regular donations, we would be grateful for any donations of gently used medical equipment which we could ship to Mandinari. If you can donate any equipment to us, please contact us, so we can work out the details.

Thank you for your generosity and support! Together, we can make a difference!
